Introduction

Tianyi Pavilion, situated beside the picturesque Moon Lake, holds one of the oldest private libraries in China, and is one of the three most well-preserved ancient family libraries existing today in the world. In addition, the unique architecture and elegant landscape of the pavilion are also renowned. It has become a must-see tourism spot in Ningbo due to its long and glorious history. Tianyi Pavilion now has been included as a National AAAA Level Tourist Attraction and has been added into the National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Tianyi Pavilion was founded in 1561 by Fan Qin. The owner specifically designed the Tianyi Pavilion keeping in mind that books are vulnerable to fire. Buildings are dotted among gardens and ponds, and were constructed in accordance with elements of traditional Chinese Yin Yang and Wuxing System Theory. Tianyi Pavilion has survived for 430 years with a large collection of about 300,000 ancient books, among which 8000 are rare book copies from the Song (960-1279) and Ming (1368-1644) dynasties. The books are precious first-hand materials for the study of history and social customs in ancient China. For centuries, Tianyi Pavilion has maintained a reputation for being the "Book City of South China". It is a wonderful combination of culture, social studies, history and art.

In 1994, the Tianyi Pavilion Museum was established. The overall layout includes the Tianyi Pavilion, Eastern Garden, the Chens' Ancestral Hall, the Qings' Branch Ancestral Hall, Calligraphy and Painting Hall and the Local Chronicles Hall. The well preserved museum features the pavilion's historical exhibits and Chinese art exhibits. It is open to the public and represents a window to the history and culture of Ningbo. Visiting this charming place can help visitors learn more about the history of Chinese libraries and books.
