Introduction
Located in the southeast of Ningbo, Dongqian Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Zhejiang and was declared a state-level tourist resort in 2015. The 1,200-year-old man-made lake boasts brilliant natural resource and is also a historical and cultural site. The Dongqian Lake, reputed as the “Oriental Lake of Fortune and Wisdom”, consists of three smaller lakes - Guzi Lake, North Lake, and South Lake, and helps make the land fertile for fish and rice.
Dongqian Lake is in a beautiful ecological environment, with picturesque scenery of lakes, clear water, green hills and lush woods, which harmoniously merges the grace of West Lake and the verve of Taihu Lake. Many natural and historical scenic spots dot the Dongqian Lake, among which the Stone Carving Park (a family tomb of the Shi) from the South Song Dynasty (1127-1279) is the most famed one. In total, there are over 70 historic sites and 200 delicate stone carvings and sculptures scattered around the lake area and each one enjoys high artistic and historical value.
Dongqian Lake was a favorite spot of poets in ancient times and today it remains a beautiful and relaxing destination with its excellent views for visitors. The area also has a strong atmosphere of Buddhism culture. For example the Little Putuo Island named after Mount Putuo features a statue of Kuan-yin, the Buddhist goddess. Many old-fashioned houses cluster around the lake and some today operate as local restaurants specializing in fresh lake fish dishes. The ecological national resort has become a perfect tourism destination for travel, entertainment and vacation.
